Ian has told us. He went to Cornwall and Simon & Ellie are covering for him. All is well with Ian.

Having a facebook page can be a good thing and also a bad thing to something like BIG L. If the page shows many `LIKES` its a good thing but if not its a bad thing.
Im not on facebook myself but Ive seen it and seen other radio stations pages where they have 1000s of `Likes` and everything looks lively and kept up to date.
If a page shows no large interest or `Likes` its not good for that organisation or project. It gives a bad impression to anyone looking in.
Just out of interest how many `Likes` has BIG L got.

None ... absolutely none ..as ours is a group not a fan page . You cannot "like" it.

Does it matter if you can?

Not wanting to blow my own trumpet here, but I worked for 14 years in a busy nightclub in Holyhead. (Holyhead's not a busy place, we know that. but it was one of two and was the busiest) However, it was THE place to be seen when it first started and over a year, attendance could be as much as 20,000 (obviously including people who claimed that they hated the music, DJ and would NEVER come back again......................untill next week) the "reputation" of the place wasn't exactly, of latter years "Silver Plate", but we got the people in, they behaved (mostly!) and we got their money.

I suppose what I'm trying to say here is that "on the face of things" and what is reality does not necessarily equate.

it was originally initiated as a fan-page, to attract listeners, publicity and also advertisers for the station but has slipped into something that better belongs on a locked up private page - the way it is run now is contraproductive and won't fullfill its original purpose to propagate BigL as a professional radio station

#76 RE: The Thursday evening Soiree by Simon D 25.05.2012 18:09

Alec .. no it wasnt. I set the current page up .. it was done for none of the reasons you stated. And why should it be locked up? It is not "run" at all . anyone is free to post in it!

Thats exactly what I was getting at. Facebook can be a great tool to spread the word, but in other situations it can be the nail in the coffin to others. In the past Ive seen a friends business grow only because he has a facebook page. He has a good and professional website but he gets more orders and sells more through facebook. Its a great way to advertise only because its direct to those who `Likes` you or are part of your circle. Its direct marketing at its best.

Spot on I guess Mike ... just need more of the grey haired brigade online lol ( not saying all listeners are grey haired !! ) you mey remember woody (steven blood) he set up a facebook page to advertise Big L ..had over 1000 members ..and used that to destroy things .. MA will explain lol

Sorry for being so frank but If you would try to be objective or at least to watch the page with the eyes of a third person you would probably agree with me I guess - the page (especially the latter photos) are all besides appealing to build up a listenership or to attract serious advertisers. As Mike said in his post a well run FB-page that looks professional and appealing in its apprearance (not like an East-London family beer happening) can be an ideal tool to attract and build up an audience and clients. - To be honest I wouldn't even dare to paste a LINK to that page on my own page - not even click a "like" which would appear on my page.
Sorry for being so outspoken - But I think building up a big loyal audience and to be considdered as a serious radio station is what BigL needs most nowadays. Babies, beer-bellies at beer-parties, open empty pizza-boxes with rests and empty wine-bottles simply don't belong on a radio-page but (if at all !!) only onto private pages. To me this is not only a question of taste and common-sense, some others may think different of course

BTW a big part (if not most) of Woody's followers were faked - they all showed the same IP# or showed the same location when using an IP-tracker - and I think most of us know where he is spending his time now....

Not sure what you meant by `grey haired brigade` I may have a few but not at all grey haired yet. But may have more if I read anymore here.
Ive always found that theres a place for everyone, grey or not. I dont k now anything about `Woody` or what the guy did and to be truthful Im not really bothered. As I said before I stopped listening to BIG L when it came off AM. I was only talking about the benefits of facebook and what it can and can not do. Its a perfect tool for direct marketing. Its point to point advertising.
